Everything I Love is the 2000 CD by Brazilian pianist/vocalist Eliane Elias. She co-produced this album with Marc Johnson. This was her last album for Blue Note before moving to Bluebird.
Her light singing voice and light piano touch go hand in hand. Always clear and vibrant, pianist Eliane Elias creates modern mainstream quality every time out. This one is a love letter that she's put together to honor those who have inspired her. The pianist mentions Bud Powell, Charles Mingus and Dizzy Gillespie, but there are more.

Both Marc Johnson and Jack DeJohnette apply that same light touch on bass and drums to Cole Porter's lively “I Love You,” as well as to her own slow and romantic composition “That's All It Was.” Carl Allen and Christian McBride appear in roles a little heavier to suit different situations.

Elias' lovely alto voice remains soft and gentle throughout. A highlight is the sentimental ballad “I Fall in Love Too Easily” with its piano fills and sparkling interlude. Quite convincing on this one, Elias breathes new life into Sammy Cahn's lyrics. The other vocal tracks appear soft and gentle as well, representing both up-tempo and slow impressions. McBride and Allen are featured in “Nostalgia in Times Square” and “Woody 'N You.” For both classic straight-ahead pieces, Elias has captured the mood with her piano trio format. Both bassists and both drummers on the session appear in frequent solo spots. An enjoyable singer and a superb pianist, Eliane Elias' romantic love letter pays homage to many, but in her own sweet way.

 ---

Perhaps more fully than any other of Miles Davis' '70s fusion albums, Dark Magus represents Davis' departure from traditional jazz and his arrival, well, somewhere else - somewhere few musicians will ever dare to tread.

Entirely recorded live on March 30, 1974 at Carnegie Hall in New York, this two-disc set shows Miles Davis and his rather large band exploring the furthest reaches of something that can well be described as free-form acid funk. Much of this set is loud, repetitive and largely dependent on heavy-handed polyrhythmic percussion. No less than three guitarists are heard here and the resulting wall of fuzz and wah-wah is overtly inspired by Jimi Hendrix's more extreme flights of fancy. It's hard to imagine this sort of performance happening at Carnegie Hall, but Miles Davis was pretty much a legend by this time. He could probably have played to sold out crowds in any venue in the world whether the audience understood what he was doing at the time or not.

The first track on Dark Magus, "Moja (Part 1)" sets the tone for the album, beginning with some rather ham-fisted open hi-hat bashing (courtesy of drummer Al Foster) that lets the listener know instantly this is no ordinary jazz album. The rest of the track is basically a solo spot for Davis' pained trumpet playing. He honks, squeals and creates some elephantine sounds via the ubiquitous wah pedal. In the background the rest of the band sounds like some giant, ugly, clumsy, but very fast multi-limbed creature that is running, tripping over itself, getting up and running some more. The overall atmosphere is dark, oppressive and possibly just a bit scary, but it's also fun and adventurous for those who can handle it.

"Moja (Part 2)" finds the band taking things down a notch and experimenting with some more atmospheric grooves throughout which percussionist James Mtume interjects some primitive drum machine which he slows down and speeds up without regard for the tempo the rest of the band is playing in. This is a very cool and unique idea that pops up regularly throughout the album. Of course, this is only after a searing sax solo by Dave Liebman and a soaring, free-time guitar solo by one of the three guitarists.

The rest of the album carries on in similar territory as the first two tracks. The accent here is on groove, whether slow or fast. Rhythms upon rhythms over which Davis, the guitarists or the saxophonists could do their thing were pretty much the name of the game that March night. Sometimes one can see how this album's sound and feel are reflexive of what bands like King Crimson or possibly even Magma were doing in their live shows at the time. Of course, both of those bands were coming from a much more European angle than Davis' afro-centric approach, but Magma's obsession with repetitive rhythm, King Crimson's brand of collective improvisation, as well as the maximalism and dissonant tendencies of both bands are mirrored here.

Dark Magus is probably not the best album with which to be introduced to Miles Davis' fusion work, as this is pretty strong stuff. It's not as weird as say, Henry Cow, but it is incredibly intense in its relentless pursuit of long-winded and noisy rhythmic jams. This album's weakness lies in a certain lack of variation across its two discs, as a lot of the material on here begins to sound the same after awhile. Those already familiar with some of Davis' work from this time period are encouraged to investigate it, however, and see just how far out Miles could go.

A month after losing Wayne Shorter to the beginnings of Weather Report, Miles Davis added young saxophonist Steve Grossman to the fold that included drummer Jack DeJohnette, bassist Dave Holland, electric pianist Chick Corea, and percussionist Airto Moreira. Just in time, too, since Bitches Brew had just been released. What is most interesting about this performance is how abstract it is, even by the standards exacted on In a Silent Way and Bitches Brew. Opening with Joe Zawinul's "Directions," with a small three-note vamp, Davis creates a spaciousness for Grossman to hit the stratosphere and for both Holland and DeJohnette to literally fall freely as a rhythm section as long as they could find a groove. The band seems to open too far; they can't seem to find each other in the maelstrom. Davis lays out, watching it all, directing from the sidelines. On "Miles Runs the Voodoo Down," since there is a discernible though minimal melody and groove, the band brings it in tighter, focusing on Davis smattering blues notes and Corea's distorted chord voicings. This is where the band hits their stride, and keeps it through "Willie Nelson" and the Sammy Cahn tune, an odd choice for this part of the program, "I Fall in Love Too Easily." From the opening of "Sanctuary" through "It's About That Time," "Bitches Brew," "Masqualero," and "Spanish Key/The Theme," the music become a kind of suite that doesn't really stop. It may pause in spots, but it loops through modal figures before disintegrating completely. There is no harmony to speak of and melody has become an extinct concept. What matters most is the nuance of groove and rhythm, and Davis found both in this band, though Grossman's playing is too busy and too green; he plays everything he knows in every solo. It's a small complaint, as this is an exciting document of a band trying to come to grips with the power of a music they don't even fully understand yet.

Of the myriad double-live sets Miles Davis recorded in the early '70s, In Concert: Live at Philharmonic Hall is the only one documenting his On the Corner street-funk period, which is immediately obvious from the cover art. Actually, in terms of repertoire, the material from Get Up With It, Big Fun, and A Tribute to Jack Johnson each takes up a greater percentage of space, but the hard-driving rhythms and plentiful effects make it clear which of Davis' fusion aesthetics applied. In Concert begins to move Davis' live work even farther away from jazz tradition, as he largely forgoes concepts of soloing or space. Instead, Davis presides over a pulsating mound of rhythm, expanding his percussion section and using traditional lead instruments more to create texture -- including his own horn, which he feeds through a wah-wah pedal and other amplification effects. Drummer Al Foster, tabla player Badal Roy, and percussionist Mtume are the centers of the recording, and electric sitar player Khalil Balakrishna adds an exotic dimension to the already tripped-out sonic stew. And "stew" isn't too far off -- the individual voices and elements in the music tend to get mixed and muddled together, which may be frustrating for some jazz fans not used to listening for the thick layers of texture in the soundscapes or the furious energy in the grooves. There are few melodies to latch onto, save for a theme from On the Corner that Davis frequently uses during the first disc to signal transitions. But melody isn't the point of this music; it's about power, rhythm, and the sum energy of the collective, and of Davis' electric jazz-rock albums, In Concert does one of the most mind-bending jobs of living up to those ideals.
